NLM Scheme

The National Livestock Mission (NLM) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India. The mission aims to develop the livestock sector holistically through entrepreneurship, fodder and feed development, breed improvement, and livelihood enhancement.

Mission Objectives

  • Promote entrepreneurial development in poultry, sheep, goat, and piggery sectors

  • Improve breed quality through genetic initiatives and scientific practices

  • Increase availability of feed and fodder through organized production and processing

  • Strengthen livestock insurance, research, training, and extension systems

Scheme Structure

Sub-Mission 1: Breed Development of Livestock and Poultry

  • Support for establishing rural poultry, piggery, and small ruminant units

  • Assistance for infrastructure and breed improvement programs

  • Applicable for individual entrepreneurs, SHGs, cooperatives, and producer companies

Sub-Mission 2: Feed and Fodder Development

  • Support for fodder seed production, hay and silage making, and block-making units

  • Encouragement for post-harvest technologies and fodder preservation infrastructure

Sub-Mission 3: Research, Innovation, Extension & Insurance

  • Funding for livestock insurance, capacity building, and innovation

  • Support for training programs, awareness campaigns, and technology transfer

Financial Assistance

  • Capital subsidy up to 50% of the total project cost, with a maximum cap of ₹50 lakh

  • Central and state share model with higher support for northeastern and hilly states

  • Support for infrastructure, machinery, training, and insurance components

  • Individual farmers and livestock entrepreneurs

  • Self Help Groups (SHGs), FPOs, and Cooperatives

  • Section 8 Companies and MSMEs in livestock/agri-business

  • Government and private research institutions

Application Process

  1. Prepare detailed project report and apply through the designated NLM portal

  2. Application is evaluated by the State Implementing Agency and recommended to the Project Approval Committee

  3. After bank loan approval, the capital subsidy is released in instalments based on project implementation
